Chinese Ak 47 Serial Numbers
Last weekend I bought my second ever AK in 2 days not really knowing anything about it.
I was in good mood so I paid $420 for it.
I know it is post ban AK but I was thinking that it would have a different kind of butt and grip.
Then I read that these were made to have a 10 round magazine.
When I took the cover off right above where the magazine goes there is a 1981 (don't have a picture of it right now)
Could that be the year made?
If you can just shed some light on what exactly I have that would be great.
Was this made/assembled in USA?

Egyptian Maadi AK47’s
One of the only semi-automatic Kalashnikov imported into the United States, in almost every regard, an exact duplicate of the Russian AKM. During the 1950’s the Soviet Union, as part of its military aid program, established the production of Soviet-pattern small arms in the Arab Republic of Egypt.
AKM rifles were manufactured at the “Factory 54,” the Maadi Company for Engineering Industries in Cairo. Key Egyptian personnel were trained in the Soviet Union, and the plant was supervised by Russians prior to their abrupt expulsion from Egypt at the hands of Anwar Sadat in 1972. Designated as the “ARM” (Automatic Rifle Misr), a semiautomatic-only version of the Egyptian AKM was introduced to the American public in 1982 by the U.S. division of Steyr-Daimler-Punch in Steyr, Austria. For all intents and purposes this is as close as most of us will ever come to a Russian AKM.
The laminated wood handguards and buttstock are correct in every detail. The lower handguard has the proper hand swells, and the buttstock has been reinforced with steel pins in all the right places. All the wood furniture was imported from Finland but finished in Egypt. The plastic pistol grip was injection-molded to correct Soviet configuration.
The metal components are exactly those of the Russian AKM. Small recesses on each side of the receiver , directly over the magazine-well, serve as magazine guides and instantly distinguish this as an AKM. The four gas escapes holes found on each side of the Ak-47’s gas cylinder have been omitted, and there are two gas relief holes on each side of the gas block where it mates with the gas tube. The bayonet lug is directly under the gas block.
Rear sights are graduated to 1000 meters (with a 300-meter battle sight marked “p”) instead of the AK-47’s 800meter maximum. An AKM muzzle breake was installed. The sheet-metal receiver cover has transverse ribs and a rolled edge over the ejection port. Chambers and bores are hard chromed. All the exterior metal surfaces have been finished with a baked on black enamel over phosphate. Only the green web sling was of Egyptian design.
No doubt about it, expect for the selective fire option and the markings on the receiver , this is a soviet AKM. Yet no more than 2000 were brought in before the importation ceased. In 1986 about 50 semiautomatic only Egyptian ARM’s with a side folding buttstock, similar in appearance to that of the East German MPiKMS-72, entered the United States via a small importer (Interport St. George UT). Pre ban Maadi rifles were only imported by and stamped on the left side of the receiver 'STEYER SECAUCUS,N.J.' If not stamped this way the rifle is a post ban rifle. They are rare with about 2000 imported. They go for $1500-$2000 and are as close to an original Russian AKM as you can get. Some were converted to full auto and were the AKs used in the movie Red Dawn

The model RPM had a 20' barrel with the end threaded with a muzzle nut tack welded on. The 1993 imported RPM rifles came with a bipod attached and later imported ones didn't.
Century Arms International or Century International Arms- Saint Albins,VT or Saint George,NH imported Maadi rifles from 1997-1999. They also assembled Maadi rifles from imported parts in 1996-1997.
Imported models were,

In 1999 the MISR S/A rifle was imported without triggers,sears,pistol grips,or hammers. US parts were added to comply with United States Code Title 18,Chapter 44,Section 922,Paragraph (r).

They were all finished poorly, unlike their steyr imported predecessors. I have one, and really like it. I would honestly rate it more valuable than a WASR10, Gunbroker has been very generous to the Maadi S/A if you follow.
Assembled in the US rifles.
The model MISR-90 rifles were assembled by Century Arms from Maadi receivers and Chinese MAK-90 parts kits. They bought 1000's of MAK-90 rifles that were disassembled and had the receivers distroyed after the import of Chinese guns and ammo was banned in April,1994. They imported Maadi receivers that had both trunions,rails,trigger guard,and mag catch installed. The first ones due to the Maadi receivers having a AKM front trunion that has a opening for a barrel with a 23mm barrel shank required a sleeve to be added to the smaller 19mm barrel shank of the MAK-90 parts kit barrel. The later assembled MISR-90 rifles used the Chinese front trunion from the MAK-90 parts kits and a Maadi receiver imported without a front trunion installed. Besides the rivets being loacated in different places on the trunion/receiver the early MISR-90 rifles have the model stamped on the left side of the reciever where the later rifles have it stamped on the barrel.
When the treasury dept. banned the import of Chinese guns and ammo in April,1994 there were 1000's of MAK-90 rifles in bonded warehouses awaiting import approval from customs and 1000's more in transit to the US. The importers filed with the treasury dept. to release the rifles that were in customs as they were in the US when the ban was enacted. The treasury dept. ruled that the rifles while physically in the US they were not legally in the US as customs had not released them. But they did allow the rifles to be released from cutsoms to be sold as parts kits if the receivers were destroyed.
In 1995-1996 two importers advertised MAK-90 parts kits for sale in the Shotgun News. Sales were really slow as there were no receivers made in the US at the time. Sales were so bad that the prices went for $139 to $69 for one kit in a year’s time. The last ad I saw before Century started making the MISR-90 rifles was that 100 or more kits the price was $39 each. A friend that owned a gun shop bought 3 kits for $59 each in 1996 and none had any machine gun parts as the fire control parts were semi auto parts. In the late 1990's MAK-90 kits would show up at gun shows every now and then. All that I have seen were semi auto kits and I have never seen a machine gun kit. (taken from various internet posts)

The Wassenaar Arrangement Semi-automatic Rifles (more commonly referred to as the WASR-series rifles) are a line of rifles manufactured in Romania by the long established Cugir Arms Factory as result of a collaboration between Century Arms International and Cugir.[1]
History and description[edit]

According to Century Arms, an American company which imports and modifies the WASR, they are semi-automatic only, single stack variants generally based on the Romanian Model 63, Pistol Mitralieră model 1963/1965 (PM md. 63), and GP 75 AKM rifles Avtomat Kalashnikova Modernizirovanniy (AKM) series of Kalashnikov rifles originally manufactured in Russia. Century decided to import the WASR to meet U.S. demand for AK-style firearms. U.S. federal code 18 USC 922R stipulates that no more than ten major components of a firearm categorized by federal law as a 'semi-automatic assault weapon' could be manufactured outside the U.S.[2] The WASR-series rifles take their name from the 1996 Wassenaar Arrangement,[citation needed] a multilateral export control regime (MECR), the purpose of which is to monitor and limit the proliferation of certain conventional weapons and dual-use technologies.
The WASR-series rifles use a Romanian-made receiver, but lack the dimples to strengthen receiver above the magazine well seen in the other AK series of rifles. Instead WASRs use internally welded spacer plates to center the magazine. The arrangements of the rivets on the receiver and front and rear trunnions are also different from many other AK derivatives. There are no known clones of the WASR series rifles to date. The lack of dimple and rivet layout allows for positive ID in the many different stock configurations.[2][1]
The WASR-10 was used to kill 22 people in the 2019 El Paso shooting.[3]
Construction[edit]
WASR-series rifles are manufactured with stamped sheet metal receivers that were originally intended for single-stack magazines. Featuring hard chrome-lined barrels, side-mount scope rail and wooden stocks, WASR-series rifles are commonly imported to the United States by Century International Arms.
In Romania the rifles are manufactured to conform with certain United States firearms regulations including Title 18, Chapter 44, of the United States Code, which defines laws for manufacturing and importing firearms such as semi-automatic only fire.[4] Century Arms modifies the weapon with upgraded fire control groups (i.e. trigger), pistol grips, and plastic folding or collapsible stocks manufactured by TAPCO of Georgia.

Older WASR-series rifles commonly produced trigger slap, which is caused by the bolt slamming backward into the trigger assembly and causing significant pain to the shooter's trigger finger. [5] Beginning in 2007, Century International Arms has installed the TAPCO Intrafuse AK G2 trigger group, eliminating the painful trigger slap problem.[6] Rifles with this trigger group will have 'TAPCO USA G2' stamped on the left side of the trigger. Some of these rifles may exhibit canted front sight blocks and gas tubes.[7]
WASR-series rifles are inexpensive and easily customized, with hundreds of aftermarket stocks, muzzle brakes, flash suppressors, telescopic sights, and other accessories available.
Variants[edit]
GP WASR-10[edit]
The WASR-10 is a post-ban version of the AKM rifle in 7.62×39mm caliber. Factory-original rifles only support single-stack, low-capacity magazines (10-rounds). After import, Century Arms offered WASR rifles modified to accept double-stack, standard-capacity magazines (machining burrs on the magazine well may cause some magazines to fit improperly if the burrs are not removed). Pistol grip and thumbhole stocks were both commonly fitted to WASR rifles.
After the sunset of the 1994 assault weapons ban, importers were able to legally equip WASR-10s with compensators, bayonet lugs, and folding stocks, thus making the GP WASR-10 (with GP standing for general purpose). Some advantages of this rifle are the reliability of the gun and the availability of standardized aftermarket parts.[8]
GP WASR-10/63[edit]
The GP WASR-10/63 was built using the same newly-manufactured single-stack receiver and chrome-lined barrel as the GP WASR-10, and the two models are cosmetically similar. However, while the GP WASR-10 was made with new parts, all parts on the GP WASR-10/63 (other than the receiver and barrel) came from a former Romanian military rifle. The original year of manufacture can be seen engraved on the left side of the trunion (the trunion is visible where it protrudes through the receiver on the left side, near the front), along with the original rifle's serial number. Dates seem to range from the early 1960s to the 1980s. Most or all small metal parts are marked with the last few digits of the original serial number. As with other WASR models imported into the United States, Century Arms modified these rifles to accept normal 30-round magazines.
The pistol grip, trigger group, slant muzzle brake and gas piston were replaced with U.S.-made substitutes to comply with U.S. regulations.[9]
There are rumors that the GP WASR-10/63 was built from rejected parts. This is not true. All parts had passed inspection and the original rifle had been accepted into actual military service.
Because the GP WASR-10/63 originated as a Romanian military rifle, Century Arms sold them with many of the original rifle's accessories, such as a bayonet, oil bottle, magazine pouch and cleaning kit.
WASR-22[edit]
The WASR-22 or AK-22 Trainer is a .22 Long Rifle, semi-automaticcadet rifle loosely based upon the AK-47 and manufactured in Romania by Cugir Arms Factory.[10] Unlike the AK-47, it uses a simple blowback method of operation. As such, it has no gas system and the internal components have been modified accordingly. While designed to be a cadet rifle for basic firearms and marksmanship training for the Romanian Army, it was never used as such. Instead, it was sold on the civilian market, primarily in the United States in collaboration with Century International Arms. Because of its cheap ammo and low recoil, it is marketed as a “starter” or “trainer AK”.[11] It is usually shipped with two 10-round magazines and is currently sold with the price ranging from $200 to $500 USD.
WASR-2[edit]
The WASR-2 is essentially a WASR-10 chambered in 5.45×39mm, and usually does not come with any accessories (muzzle brake, bayonet), especially if it is ordered directly from Century Arms.[12]
Spare parts were difficult to come by until the import of AIMS74 kits were imported around 2018. These parts were often a direct match. While some suffered from reliability issues due to parts made on old tooling and loose tolerances, most were reliable.[citation needed]
WASR-3[edit]
Chinese Ak 47 Serial Numbers
This commercial export version of the WASR is chambered in 5.56×45mm NATO (which can also safely fire the .223 Remington round). It usually comes in the same configuration as the WASR-2. These have known problems with jamming or failure to feed. This may be due to low quality magazines, or their followers. The WASR-3 was originally supplied with surplus 5.45×39mm AK-74 magazines, which do not reliably feed the 5.56/.223 cartridge. People have used Wieger magazines with some success. Century Arms eventually began including Romanian copies of the reliable Wieger magazine with these rifles. Some switch the follower of an AK-74 magazine with one from Robinson Arms.[13] Israeli Galil steel magazines are also known to work without modification in the WASR-3. Some owners have also modified the rifle to accept Bulgarian Circle-10 5.56 magazines, or Polish Beryl 5.56 magazines. These sometimes require some material to be removed from the receiver center support bar.

US parts were added to comply with United States Code Title 18,Chapter 44,Section 922,Paragraph (r). I would also rate it to be middle of the scale of AKs. They were all finished poorly, unlike their steyr imported predecessors. I have one, and really like it. I would honestly rate it more valuable than a WASR10, Gunbroker has been very generous to the Maadi S/A if you follow.
Assembled in the US rifles.
The model MISR-90 rifles were assembled by Century Arms from Maadi receivers and Chinese MAK-90 parts kits. They bought 1000's of MAK-90 rifles that were disassembled and had the receivers distroyed after the import of Chinese guns and ammo was banned in April,1994. They imported Maadi receivers that had both trunions,rails,trigger guard,and mag catch installed. The first ones due to the Maadi receivers having a AKM front trunion that has a opening for a barrel with a 23mm barrel shank required a sleeve to be added to the smaller 19mm barrel shank of the MAK-90 parts kit barrel. The later assembled MISR-90 rifles used the Chinese front trunion from the MAK-90 parts kits and a Maadi receiver imported without a front trunion installed. Besides the rivets being loacated in different places on the trunion/receiver the early MISR-90 rifles have the model stamped on the left side of the reciever where the later rifles have it stamped on the barrel.
When the treasury dept. banned the import of Chinese guns and ammo in April,1994 there were 1000's of MAK-90 rifles in bonded warehouses awaiting import approval from customs and 1000's more in transit to the US. The importers filed with the treasury dept. to release the rifles that were in customs as they were in the US when the ban was enacted. The treasury dept. ruled that the rifles while physically in the US they were not legally in the US as customs had not released them. But they did allow the rifles to be released from cutsoms to be sold as parts kits if the receivers were destroyed.
In 1995-1996 two importers advertised MAK-90 parts kits for sale in the Shotgun News. Sales were really slow as there were no receivers made in the US at the time. Sales were so bad that the prices went for $139 to $69 for one kit in a year’s time. The last ad I saw before Century started making the MISR-90 rifles was that 100 or more kits the price was $39 each. A friend that owned a gun shop bought 3 kits for $59 each in 1996 and none had any machine gun parts as the fire control parts were semi auto parts. In the late 1990's MAK-90 kits would show up at gun shows every now and then. All that I have seen were semi auto kits and I have never seen a machine gun kit. (taken from various internet posts)

The Wassenaar Arrangement Semi-automatic Rifles (more commonly referred to as the WASR-series rifles) are a line of rifles manufactured in Romania by the long established Cugir Arms Factory as result of a collaboration between Century Arms International and Cugir.[1]
History and description[edit]

According to Century Arms, an American company which imports and modifies the WASR, they are semi-automatic only, single stack variants generally based on the Romanian Model 63, Pistol Mitralieră model 1963/1965 (PM md. 63), and GP 75 AKM rifles Avtomat Kalashnikova Modernizirovanniy (AKM) series of Kalashnikov rifles originally manufactured in Russia. Century decided to import the WASR to meet U.S. demand for AK-style firearms. U.S. federal code 18 USC 922R stipulates that no more than ten major components of a firearm categorized by federal law as a 'semi-automatic assault weapon' could be manufactured outside the U.S.[2] The WASR-series rifles take their name from the 1996 Wassenaar Arrangement,[citation needed] a multilateral export control regime (MECR), the purpose of which is to monitor and limit the proliferation of certain conventional weapons and dual-use technologies.
The WASR-series rifles use a Romanian-made receiver, but lack the dimples to strengthen receiver above the magazine well seen in the other AK series of rifles. Instead WASRs use internally welded spacer plates to center the magazine. The arrangements of the rivets on the receiver and front and rear trunnions are also different from many other AK derivatives. There are no known clones of the WASR series rifles to date. The lack of dimple and rivet layout allows for positive ID in the many different stock configurations.[2][1]
The WASR-10 was used to kill 22 people in the 2019 El Paso shooting.[3]
Construction[edit]
WASR-series rifles are manufactured with stamped sheet metal receivers that were originally intended for single-stack magazines. Featuring hard chrome-lined barrels, side-mount scope rail and wooden stocks, WASR-series rifles are commonly imported to the United States by Century International Arms.
In Romania the rifles are manufactured to conform with certain United States firearms regulations including Title 18, Chapter 44, of the United States Code, which defines laws for manufacturing and importing firearms such as semi-automatic only fire.[4] Century Arms modifies the weapon with upgraded fire control groups (i.e. trigger), pistol grips, and plastic folding or collapsible stocks manufactured by TAPCO of Georgia.

Older WASR-series rifles commonly produced trigger slap, which is caused by the bolt slamming backward into the trigger assembly and causing significant pain to the shooter's trigger finger. [5] Beginning in 2007, Century International Arms has installed the TAPCO Intrafuse AK G2 trigger group, eliminating the painful trigger slap problem.[6] Rifles with this trigger group will have 'TAPCO USA G2' stamped on the left side of the trigger. Some of these rifles may exhibit canted front sight blocks and gas tubes.[7]
WASR-series rifles are inexpensive and easily customized, with hundreds of aftermarket stocks, muzzle brakes, flash suppressors, telescopic sights, and other accessories available.
Variants[edit]
GP WASR-10[edit]
The WASR-10 is a post-ban version of the AKM rifle in 7.62×39mm caliber. Factory-original rifles only support single-stack, low-capacity magazines (10-rounds). After import, Century Arms offered WASR rifles modified to accept double-stack, standard-capacity magazines (machining burrs on the magazine well may cause some magazines to fit improperly if the burrs are not removed). Pistol grip and thumbhole stocks were both commonly fitted to WASR rifles.
After the sunset of the 1994 assault weapons ban, importers were able to legally equip WASR-10s with compensators, bayonet lugs, and folding stocks, thus making the GP WASR-10 (with GP standing for general purpose). Some advantages of this rifle are the reliability of the gun and the availability of standardized aftermarket parts.[8]
GP WASR-10/63[edit]
The GP WASR-10/63 was built using the same newly-manufactured single-stack receiver and chrome-lined barrel as the GP WASR-10, and the two models are cosmetically similar. However, while the GP WASR-10 was made with new parts, all parts on the GP WASR-10/63 (other than the receiver and barrel) came from a former Romanian military rifle. The original year of manufacture can be seen engraved on the left side of the trunion (the trunion is visible where it protrudes through the receiver on the left side, near the front), along with the original rifle's serial number. Dates seem to range from the early 1960s to the 1980s. Most or all small metal parts are marked with the last few digits of the original serial number. As with other WASR models imported into the United States, Century Arms modified these rifles to accept normal 30-round magazines.
The pistol grip, trigger group, slant muzzle brake and gas piston were replaced with U.S.-made substitutes to comply with U.S. regulations.[9]
There are rumors that the GP WASR-10/63 was built from rejected parts. This is not true. All parts had passed inspection and the original rifle had been accepted into actual military service.
Because the GP WASR-10/63 originated as a Romanian military rifle, Century Arms sold them with many of the original rifle's accessories, such as a bayonet, oil bottle, magazine pouch and cleaning kit.
WASR-22[edit]
The WASR-22 or AK-22 Trainer is a .22 Long Rifle, semi-automaticcadet rifle loosely based upon the AK-47 and manufactured in Romania by Cugir Arms Factory.[10] Unlike the AK-47, it uses a simple blowback method of operation. As such, it has no gas system and the internal components have been modified accordingly. While designed to be a cadet rifle for basic firearms and marksmanship training for the Romanian Army, it was never used as such. Instead, it was sold on the civilian market, primarily in the United States in collaboration with Century International Arms. Because of its cheap ammo and low recoil, it is marketed as a “starter” or “trainer AK”.[11] It is usually shipped with two 10-round magazines and is currently sold with the price ranging from $200 to $500 USD.
WASR-2[edit]
The WASR-2 is essentially a WASR-10 chambered in 5.45×39mm, and usually does not come with any accessories (muzzle brake, bayonet), especially if it is ordered directly from Century Arms.[12]
Spare parts were difficult to come by until the import of AIMS74 kits were imported around 2018. These parts were often a direct match. While some suffered from reliability issues due to parts made on old tooling and loose tolerances, most were reliable.[citation needed]
WASR-3[edit]

This commercial export version of the WASR is chambered in 5.56×45mm NATO (which can also safely fire the .223 Remington round). It usually comes in the same configuration as the WASR-2. These have known problems with jamming or failure to feed. This may be due to low quality magazines, or their followers. The WASR-3 was originally supplied with surplus 5.45×39mm AK-74 magazines, which do not reliably feed the 5.56/.223 cartridge. People have used Wieger magazines with some success. Century Arms eventually began including Romanian copies of the reliable Wieger magazine with these rifles. Some switch the follower of an AK-74 magazine with one from Robinson Arms.[13] Israeli Galil steel magazines are also known to work without modification in the WASR-3. Some owners have also modified the rifle to accept Bulgarian Circle-10 5.56 magazines, or Polish Beryl 5.56 magazines. These sometimes require some material to be removed from the receiver center support bar.
